Robert Sparks, 38, was bleeding heavily from a cut on his head, having come up “on the short end of a couple of fights,” when he left the 2nd Street neighborhood and returned with a Glock semi-automatic handgun around 12:30 a.m. today, Englewood Police Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
As the officers approached, Sparks “removed the holstered handgun from his waistband and threw it into a flower bed near the Community Baptist Church at First Street and Lafayette Place,” Torell said.
The gun had “16 rounds in the clip and one in the chamber ready to go,” the captain said. “That could have gotten ugly.”
Detectives later located several people who said that Sparks had threatened them with the gun — which Torell said was reported stolen in a 2005 burglary in Pennsylvania.
Sparks was being held on $150,000 bail in the city lockup pending transfer to the Beregen County Jail.
Charges include several illegal weapons offenses — including one for being a felon in possession of a firearm — as well as possession of a high-capacity magazine, hindering apprehension, reeiving stolen property and tampering with evidence.
“All of our cops on this call should be commended,” Torell said. “They most likely prevented some of our residents from being shot and possibly killed.”
An investigation with Pennsylvania authorities was continuing, he said.
