The combatants, both in their 40s, had it out at Wides Corner on West Englewood Avenue while a large crowd watched. Some recorded the battle on their cellphones, witnesses said.

What the men were fighting over hadn’t been determined as of early this evening, Englewood Police Lt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Weapons were found and detectives were talking to what witnesses remained, as well as to the two men involved. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification was at the scene, collecting evidence for processing.

The worse-injured victim went into surgery tonight at Englewood Medical Center.

The other was taken to Holy Name Hospital in order to keep them apart.

Once a bustling commercial district, Wides Corner is a rundown area of town, with a liquor store and convenience shop where people regularly hang out.

It got its name for Same Wides, one of the city’s most popular and successful merchants at the turn of the 1900s. He had a grocery store at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and West Englewood.
