ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Happy Bithday to Engelwood's Bill Parcells!

Parcells, who lives in Englewood and went to River Dell Regional High School, turns 75 today.

Charles "Bill" Parcells, born Aug. 22, 1941 in Englewood, is a former football head coach, both in college with the Air Force Academy and the National Football League with the New York Giants, New England Patriots, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. He currently is a "courtesy consultant" for the Cleveland Browns. 

Parcells grew up in Hasbrouck Heights. His mother, Ida Parcells was a housewife while his father, Charles (Chubby) Parcells, played quarterback at Georgetown University and worked for the FBI before becoming a lawyer for Uniroyal Tires.

Prior to his sophomore year in high school, Parcells' family moved to Oradell, where he attended River Dell Regional High School.

Parcells was an athlete as a youth. He become a standout player on his high school's football, baseball, and basketball teams. He attended Colgate University and transferred to the University of Wichita (Wichita State University), where he played linebacker and earned a physical education degree.

In his NFL coaching career, Parcells won two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV. 

He led the New England Patriots to Super Bowl XXXI, but lost to the Green Bay Packers, 35-21. He also led the New York Jets to the 1998 AFC Championship Game.

He announced his third retirement from football Jan. 22, 2007 before returning to the sport later that year as the vice president of football operations with the Miami Dolphins. Parcells resigned from the Dolphins in September 2010, working as a "consultant" with the team until he took a leave of absence in October 2010, and left the team after the season. 

He is currently an NFL analyst for ESPN.
