The masks and painting were made in "The Art of Survival" workshops, sponsored by Center for Hope and Safety — formerly Shelter Our Sisters — in Rochelle Park.
The participants communicate the effects of trauma and abuse through their art. Imagination and artistic expression through the creative process can foster growth, development, self-exploration, a sense of empowerment and ultimately healing.
The workshops were held under the direction and management of Marta Levy, of Center for Hope and Safety and the inspiring instructions of artist Karen Snyder-Kadish.
These workshops encourage open communication and interaction, while experimenting with art materials through which the artistic participants can express experiences and feelings.
The culmination of the art workshops will be displayed at the Art School at the Old Church, in Demarest, in the Café Gallery throughout October in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
A kickoff reception will be at 6 p.m. on Oct. 5.
The Café Gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.; Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
