The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. on Route 4 East at River Road, Bergen County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kyra Pazant said.
The vehicle struck a utility pole, a guardrail, and a NJ Transit bus stop, snapping the pole on impact and sending live wires across the River Road on and off ramps, Pazant said. The right lane of Route 4 East and both ramps were shut down.
PSE&G, NJ Transit, the Department of Transportation, and the Traffic Incident Management team were all notified and responded to the scene.
The driver, described only as a male, fled on foot and was found near the QuickChek on River Street in Hackensack, Pazant said.
He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) under statute 39:4-50. Pazant said the man made suicidal statements and was taken to New Bridge Medical Center for medical treatment. No further information was immediately released.
