“Usually we have a lot of time to think about our clients' cakes,” said Karin Carkirdas, who owns Keremo Cakes with her aunt, Elizabeth Ohanian, and sister, Karolin Cakirdas.
The pair won Monday evening’s “Emoji Cake” episode of Food Network’s “Cake Wars.”
The prize? A $10,000 check that the owners say will take their cakes to another level.
“The time constraint was the most challenging part,” said Karin Cakirdas, 33 of Fairview.
She had been working as a graphic dsigner for a luxury brand but always found herself gravitating toward cake design. Carkirdas and her aunt, Ohanian of Hillsdale, and sister, eventually opened the storefront in 2013.
"Nothing feels better than delivering a cake and seeing the joy it brings our clients," Carkirdas added.
It was the panel of judges, however, that Cresskill's confectionaries had to wow on Monday evening — twice.
“First we made a mini cake, which was a gift with an emoji face on it,” Cakirdas said. “Being on ‘Cake Wars’ felt like a gift.. and I thought that paired well.”
Then came the real challenge: four hours to produce one four-foot, emoji-themed masterpiece.
“It was something I thought we could never do but we did — and we won," Cakirdas said. "I’m really proud of that."
