Stephen Morena and Officer Aundra Ellington quickly gathered the woman – who, it turns out, had an oxygen tank that could have exploded before long – after the blaze broke out in the brick building at 34 State Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday. Heroes: First-Responding Paterson Police Officers Evacuate Burning Building UPDATE: A trio of Paterson police heroes evacuated a multi-family home during a Saturday morning fire, getting several residents to safety, authorities confirmed. Officers Edward Akins, Kevin Brito and Mark Alvarez were instantly on the scene of the Oak Street fire and got all of the residents out safely, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said. The 1-year-old girl was breathing but was limp when her mother handed her to Officer Mark Carillo on Tuesday, Capt. Darrin DeWitt said. The child remained unresponsive, so Carillo, rather than wait for an ambulance, took her and her mother to Hackensack University Medical Center himself, using his cruiser’s lights and siren, DeWitt said.
