Power restored to Avalon at Edgewater neighborhood, cars retrieved, post office, schools to reopen

UPDATE: Power has been restored to homes surrounding the fire-ravaged Avalon at Edgewater apartment complex, 80 units in a neighboring building are open again — half of which are affordable housing — and a special fund for displaced families has topped $40,000, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

Edgewater schools will reopen on Monday, and the post office on River Road, down the street from the complex, reopens tomorrow, he added.

The slow, arduous process includes 150 cars being retrieved by their owners from an underground parking garage earlier today.

The Donation & Relief Center will be open 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow and on weekdays, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, the cleanup was continuing.
