Brian Long, 43, is undergoing experimental treatments in Manhattan for the renal cell carcinoma, which has spread to his lymph nodes.
A former NYPD officer from Bergenfield, Long transferred to New Milford in 1994, launching a 20-year career serving the public.
“Brian is an awesome person, officer and father,” Bogota Sgt. Geoffrey Cole told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He would do anything for anyone.”
A fund has been established to help Long and his family meet expenses not covered by insurance, as well as other costs.
These include frequent bio-therapy treatments for the uncommon, aggressive cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
“These medicines are supposed to try to stop cancer cells from growing and blocking the blood vessels that feed tumors,” said fellow New Milford Officer Robert Jones, who set up the GoFundMe page for the Longs.
“We hope beyond hope that these medicines will help Brian’s cancer from spreading further and shrink the tumors,” Jones said. “This is a Phase II trial and not much is known, but there has been some success thus far with other patients.
“This will continue unless the medicine stops working or other problems arise.”
Jones asks that people “help make this horrible time a little easier for Brian and his family.”
“Just knowing that some of his bills will be taken care of will relieve at least some stress and give him more strength to fight this disease,” he said.
