Ivan and Robert Melian were identified following the 2:10 a.m. attack, Police Chief Martin Kahn told Daily Voice Thursday afternoon.

Officers responding to a report of a fight on Hamilton Avenue near DeSota Place saw Ivan Melian, 20, standing over one of the victims, Kahn said.He ran when he saw them but was quickly chased down, the chief said.

Taken were an iPhone and an UnderArmor backpack containing several personal items, he said.

An ambulance responded to headquarters and took one of the victims -- a 30-year-old Elizabeth man -- to HackensackUMS Palisades in North Bergen for treatment of a severe cut on his head, Kahn said. The other victim, a 29-year-old Cliffside Park man, didn't require medical attention, he said.

Soon after, 35-year-old Robert Melian called police to see whether his brother had been arrested, Kahn said.

He showed up carrying the backpack and was arrested, the chief said.

The elder Melain -- a repeat offender recently given probation on a drug conviction -- posted $50,000 bail and was released pending a court hearing.

His brother was headed to the Bergen County Jail on the same amount. Both were charged with robbery, among other counts.
