Boxcutter attack claim doesn’t fool Cliffside cops

A man who wanted to avoid paying for a broken window will have to dish out even more money in fines after telling police he’d been stabbed. Based on the information it had, an area newspaper reported the stabbing without noting, as the PILOT reported Tuesday, that investigators doubted his story right from the start.

A staffer on the overnight shift at Palisades Medical Center alerted local and county authorities that 30-year-old Alexander Mejia needed nearly two dozen stitches to close the wound after coming into the emergency room in the middle of the night Tuesday.

Mejia tried claiming he was stabbed on Gorge Road in Cliffside Park by two men with a box cutter when he had actually smashed his elbow through a vacant Palisade Avenue storefront awhile earlier, Detective Capt. Michael Russo said Friday.

Mejia confessed, Russo said, and will likely have to pay fines stemming from initial complaints of obstructing justice, criminal mischief (for the broken window) and giving cops bogus information. Then there’s the matter of the window.
