After eight rounds, eighth-grader Ahlron Pacana emerged victorious, with eighth-graders Emily Hughes and Caitlin Jones tying for second place.

Roy W. Brown Middle School Principal Shane Biggins called the spelling bee the "highest-profile academic event for elementary and middle school aged students."

Pacana will advance to challenge 85 other Bergen County and Passaic County students March 22 at the North Jersey Spelling Bee at Bergen County Community College in Paramus.

The event is part of a larger competition to help determine the participants in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
