BERGENFIELD, NJ -- Friends of the Bergenfield Library are asking patrons to donate to the borough food pantry during a Marketplace sale from Oct. 8-11.
The organization will set up shop in the downstairs of the library's Friends Room to resell recycled holiday decorations as well as jewelry.
In exchange, the group is requesting gift cards to supermarkets so that pantry organizers can restock shelves with canned goods, pasta and toiletries and distribute them to those in need.
"We like to think of ourselves as friends of the whole community," Friends of Bergenfield Library President Linda Mohr said. "Here we are and this is what we do, and we remind the community of that, too."
The group plans to repeat the event closer to the holidays in a second round of giving.
"Kids with large families maybe can't invite their friends over because mom can't afford juice boxes or cookies," Mohr said. "This allows them to be free and not be deprived."
