BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Iris Novas Cooney and Pat August will present "The Facts about Diabetes" at the Bergenfield Public Library on Tuesday, May 24.

Cooney is a community health education consultant, Horizon NJ Health. August works for the Bergenfield Health Department.

According to the American Diabetes Association,

  • in 2010, over 70,000 people with diagnosed diabetes had lower-limb amputations;
  • over 29 million Americans -- or 9.3 percent of the population -- had diabetes, as of 2012;
  • in 2010, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. -- and it's not always the listed cause of death; and
  • the total costs of diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. were $245 billion in 2012.

The session will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m., in the Friends Meeting Room. The library is located at 50 W. Clinton Ave. To keep up with library events, visit its website or follow it on Facebook.
