A viral illness is spreading through classrooms in Prince George’s County, with more than 40 schools reporting cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease, according to district officials.
Prince George’s County Public Schools said as of Thursday, Oct. 23, over 40 schools have confirmed cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD).
The viral illness typically affects young children, but officials warned that anyone can get it.
Symptoms include fever, poor appetite, sore throat, and other cold-like signs.

DOJ, UVA Reach Agreement Over Civil Rights Violations, Bias Investigations Paused
The US Department of Justice has reached a landmark agreement with the University of Virginia, requiring the school to comply with federal civil rights laws and protect students and faculty from discrimination.
Under the agreement, UVA will be bound by the Justice Department’s “Guidance for Recipients of Federal Funding Regarding Unlawful Discrimination,” ensuring that the university does not engage in unlawful racial discrimination in admissions, hiring, or other university programs, the DOJ said on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Rabid Raccoon Trapped Under Lockers Inside Maryland School, Health Officials Say
A raccoon that made its way inside a Baltimore school during dismissal this week has tested positive for rabies, city health officials confirmed.
According to the Baltimore City Health Department, Animal Control was notified Wednesday, Oct. 15, after the raccoon captured from Fallstaff Elementary Middle School tested positive for the virus.
The day before, on Oct. 14, school officials said the raccoon was first spotted outside the building during dismissal, before it managed to slip inside through an open door.

A Franklin & Marshall College student who secretly recorded 19 nude women in a dorm bathroom has been sentenced to jail and probation, prosecutors announced Friday, Oct. 3.
