Police ID Man Who Killed Woman, Hospitalized Her Mother In Maryland Triple Shooting

Police say that a 25-year-old man was the shooter who killed his housemate and shot her mother several times in Montgomery County.

Layhill resident Manuel Alejandro Ayala has been arrested and charged with a triple shooting that left Rosa Maria Benitez-Ozuna, 65, dead and two others injured on Monday night.

Officers were called shortly before 8 p.m. to the 14200 block of Punch Street to investigate a reported shooting that left a man on the street suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Further investigation led them to a nearby home, where they found Benitez-Ozuna dead, and her mother was rushed to an area hospital in serious condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Ayala, who was a resident of the home where the bodies were found, was identified as a suspect, and the department announced that he was arrested on Tuesday.

Ayala was arrested without incident and charged with:

  • First-degree murder;

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder;
  • Multiple weapons offenses.

He is awaiting his initial bond hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
