A Maryland man who used to serve as a Department of Defense deputy chief admitted to his role in a violent dogfighting ring that involved him electrocuting animals who lost, federal authorities announced. Frederick Douglass Moorefield, Jr., 63, pleaded guilty to federal charges that include conspiracy to engage in animal fighting, specifically the fighting of dogs, and interstate travel in aid of racketeering. The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is seeking donations and good homes after dozens of dogs and a cat were rescued from a hoarded rowhome this week. Already facing a shortage of space in their facility, BARCS took in 83 dogs and the cat after they were found in the Clyburn/Pimlico neighborhood housed together in small crates stacked on top of one another. Shelter space has hit capacity at the Anne Arundel County Animal Care and Control Center (AACACC), prompting free adoption fees for all available dogs effective immediately. Investigators in Frederick County walked into a veritable dog graveyard over the weekend when they were called by neighbors to a Walkersville home for reports of dead and abused animals on the property. Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Division of Animal Control responded to a call in the 8300 block of Water Street Road on Saturday, Feb. 11, where there were reports of malnourished and possibly dead dogs at the residence. The Humane Rescue Alliance in D.C. has offered a reward of $7,500 in the hopes of finding six stolen puppies, sources said. On September 14, the HRA announced that multiple now five-week-old puppies were kidnapped and stripped from their mother when they were just three weeks old. These puppies are supposed to remain with their mother, Godiva, and littermates until eight to 10 weeks old, the HRA said.
