Powerball fever paid off big for Virginia schools, even though the record-breaking jackpot was won out of state.
During the 46-drawing jackpot run that ended on Tuesday, Dec. 24, Powerball ticket sales in Virginia generated an estimated $33.5 million in profit for public education, according to Lottery officials.
The Christmas Eve drawing alone produced more than 166,000 winning tickets in Virginia, officials said.
