Improperly discarded fireplace ashes ignited a fire that caused $55,000 in damages to a Harford County home, officials said. The blaze broke out on Thursday, Dec. 5, at approximately 3:49 p.m. at a two-story single-family home located on Shepherd Court in Jarrettsville, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. A faulty extension cord is to blame for a Washington County fire that left a family displaced and destroyed a home in Hancock on Sunday afternoon, according to investigators. Two residents were reportedly displaced over the weekend when an attic fire rapidly spread to the rest of an Elkton home, officials say. It took firefighters from the Singerly Fire Company approximately an hour to control a blaze that broke out in a Kirkaldy Drive home in Elkton at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, according to the Maryland Fire Marshal. A Maryland family got an unwelcome wake-up call on Friday morning when they were alerted to a large attic fire that caused upwards of $250,000 in damage, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
