Update: Police Suspend Search For Missing Kayaker In Douglas Update: Police and rescue crews have called off the search for a man they feared missing in a Worcester County reservoir on Friday, Aug. 18.  A man was seen fishing from a kayak Thursday morning, but the kayak was found capsized hours later without the angler.  A new surveillance video uncovered Friday shows the man launching the kayak at the Whitins Reservoir in Douglas Thursday morning. Embezzlement: Douglas Postal Worker Filed More Than $50K In False Expenses, Feds Say A US Post Office employee from Worcester County faces up to 10 years in prison after federal authorities charged him with embezzling more than $50,000 in government funds, authorities said. Anthony Fernandes, 37, of Douglas, is charged with one count of theft of government money, the US Attorney General for Massachusetts said.  Fernandes was a supervisor at the USPS in Buzzards Bay and allegedly filed fraudulent reimbursement requests from April through November 2022, the prosecutor said. Man Leads Police On Chase, Fires Gun Into Air In Dudley: Police A man in Dudley led police on a chase before firing a gun into the air when cornered by officers on Thursday, Feb. 9.  Dudley police were called to Chase Avenue just before noon after someone called police to say the man, whose name was not released, had left the area with a "training gun," officials said. Elderly Douglas Woman Killed By Car At End Of Her Driveway: Police A Douglas woman has died after she was hit by a car at the end of her driveway this week, authorities said. Police received multiple calls about a person who was hit by a car near 93 West Street around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 26, Douglas Police said on Facebook.  Upon arrival, officers found an elderly woman in the road at the corner of West Street and Johnson Court, police said.  The woman, later identified as 71-year-old Dong Mei Ying, of Douglas, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.  Initial investigation suggests the woman was at the end of her driveway …

Wrong-Way Driver From Douglas Killed In 2-Car Crash On Route 146: Police A wrong-way driver from central Massachusetts was killed in a two-car crash close to the Rhode Island border, authorities said. The 42-year-old man from Douglas died in the crash that happened on Route 146 in Uxbridge around 10:19 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, Massachusetts State Police said.  Initial investigation revealed the man was going the wrong way when he crashed his 2006 Chrysler 300 into a 2019 Mazda CX5 about a half mile from the Rhode Island border.  He sustained serious injuries from the crash and later died at a local hospital, police said. Local Musician ID'd As Victim In Fatal House Fire A small town had its first fatal fire in 20 years on Wednesday after a person died in a home that did not have smoke alarms. On Wednesday, Nov. 11, around 10:20 p.m., firefighters were called to a fire at 31 Glen St., in Douglas. When they arrived they saw a fire blazing in the back part of the house. There was one person in the home, Keith Bemis, 62, at the time of the fire and he died, firefighters said.
