Like many other restaurant chains, Buca di Beppo said the business hadn't bounced back since the COVID-19 pandemic. Customer spending is lower than expected, and supply costs remain high, according to court documents. It's a common tale for several "fast-casual" dining restaurants that have failed to thrive in recent years.
Revenue for Buca di Beppo was down 10 percent for the first five months of 2024.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy will allow the company to reorganize its debt and create a plan to repay the nearly $50 million it owes to creditors, USA Today reported.
The restaurant chain said it had or planned to shutter 18 restaurants nationwide and shift focus to 44 "core" locations across 14 states.

- Gaithersburg — 112 Kentlands Blvd
New Jersey
- Atlantic City —1900 Pacific Avenue
Pennsylvania
- Pittsburgh —3 East Station Square Drive
- Pittsburgh — 6600 Robinson Centre Drive
- Wyomissing — 2745 Paper Mill Road
Locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Utah will close or have already shut their doors, per CBS News.
Buca di Beppo joins Red Lobster, Tijuana Flats, and Sticky's Finger Joint who have all filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this year.
