Suffolk County prosecutors made their opening statements Friday, Dec. 8, in the trial of a Boston woman who is accused of driving over her friend during an argument, leading to injuries that would cause her death.
Amara Smothers, 47, of Mattapan, is accused of killing Darnella Grossett-Kellam, 51, a woman she had known for several years, during a heated argument in March 2017, the prosecutor said.

A 22-year-old Boston woman will face charges after she fatally struck 19-year-old University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student Frank Petillo Jr. earlier this year, authorities said.
Danasia Sampson, of Mattapan, MA, was charged last week with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said. Sampson is also a student at the university.

Trevor Lawrence, age 32, of Mattapan, faces charges of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and numerous firearms and ammunition charges in the alleged May 2021 shooting, the Suffolk County District Attorney said. A Mattapan man, wanted for assaulting a police officer, was arrested after he attacked another man at an MBTA station with his own shoe, authorities said.
Police responded to a report of an assault at Back Bay Station around 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, Transit Police said. Upon arrival, a 58-year-old male victim told officers that another man, later identified as Oscar Lye, punched him in the face without being provoked.
