'There's A Grenade In My Car': Man's Comment Spark Response In Stow — More Dud Than Deadly

A man prompted a full response from multiple police and firefighter agencies in Middlesex County after he walked into a building and reported that he had found a grenade in the trunk of his car.

Stow first responders and members of multiple bomb squads rushed to the area on Friday, March 22. Police cleared the area around 2:15 p.m. and bomb techs prepared to get to work.

The man was telling the truth. There was an unexploded World War II area Mk. 2 "Pineapple" fragmentation grenade in his car's trunk, but it was inert and could not explode, police said. It was most likely used for training.

It's unclear how the grenade ended up in his car.

"I would like to remind all residents to call 911 immediately if you find something suspicious or that resembles any kind of military ordinance," Stow Chief John Paul Benoit said. "Do not attempt to move or handle any potential explosive. Leave the area and let first responders handle the situation professionally."
