Northampton Roundabout Detour To Send Vehicles Over the Coolidge Bridge

For two to three weeks, motorists exiting Interstate 91 at Northampton Exit 19 will be in for a long detour over the Coolidge Bridge.

The roundabout construction detour that will begin on July 20 is outlined in purple. All vehicles getting off I-91 at Exit 19 in Northampton will have to use this detour for two to three weeks.

The detour is necessary, state officials said, to allow for the construction of a new $8 million roundabout, traffic lights and pedestrian crossing at the Damon Road-Route 9 intersection in Northampton.

The detour is set to being July 20 and could last 14-21 days, according to The Daily Hampshire Gazette. Once in place, there will be no going straight onto Damon Road. The four-way intersection will become one-way for travelers coming off the exit.

All the off-ramp traffic will be diverted to go over the Coolidge Bridge and into Hadley.

The Coolidge Bridge is already often the site of heavy traffic during morning and evening commutes.

The detour route will take drivers from the ramp, over the bridge, then turning right onto Old Bay Road in Hadley. From there, vehicles will travel behind the Pride gas station, then turn left onto Bay Road, make another left onto Route 9/Russell, and finally back over the bridge to make a right turn onto Damon Road in Northampton.

Detour signs are being installed this week.
