Detectives were in the 200 block of Union Street just before 2 a.m. when they heard gunshots coming from the intersection of School and High streets, said Ryan Walsh, Springfield police spokesperson.

Officers could "hear and feel bullets whizzing by them" as they rushed toward the area, but whoever had fired was gone, Walsh said. Police noted a car and a building window had bullet holes in them.

Surveillance video showed a group of people arguing when one of them jumped into a car and sped away, Walsh said. One person pulled a gun and shot at the escaping vehicle, and a second suspect fired in the direction of the officers as they responded.

Officers detained several people, but the two shooters ran away.

Detectives are investigating the shooting.
