Joseph Williams Bowles, Jr. was inside an 8-foot by 10-foot shed in his parents' backyard on River Springs Road in Avenue when it went up in flames on Friday night, authorities announced following a days-long investigation.

Officials say that shortly after 11 p.m. on Feb. 16, crews from the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department were called to a home on River Springs Road, when the homeowner found their shed ablaze with a person still possibly inside.

The flames were knocked down within minutes, and inside, firefighters confirmed that Bowles was found dead.

Bowles' body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the exact cause of death, though the fire marshal said that they haven't uncovered evidence that it was an act of arson and are still exploring "all possible accidental causes."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and Maryland Fire Marshal.

"Although smoke alarms are not required in sheds, the Office of the State Fire Marshal requests everyone to remain vigilant in installing and maintaining smoke alarms in their homes and practice fire safety, including having an escape plan," officials said.

"Please take time to ensure the safety of your family and friends by maintaining these early warning life safety devices," stated Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray added.
