The study breaks down the cultural diversity of more than 500 cities using key indicators like ethnoracial diversity, linguistic diversity, and birthplace diversity, according to 2024 US Census Bureau data.

WalletHub ranked the top five ethnically diverse cities as:

  • 1. Gaithersburg, MD
  • 2. Jersey City, NJ
  • 3. Germantown, MD
  • 4. Silver Spring, MD
  • 5. Kent, WA

Rockville, MD ranked at no. 8 on the list, as well.

According to the study, Gaithersburg was chosen largely for its ethnoracial diversity, with about 32 percent of its residents being white, 26 being Hispanic, 16 percent being Black and 21 percent being Asian.

“People who live in ethnically diverse cities have the opportunity to experience new cultures, languages, foods and viewpoints, allowing them to learn more about the world,” said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe.

“People who grow up in diverse cities also are less likely to develop prejudiced views of people who are different from them. In addition, cities benefit from the unique skill sets that people of different cultures and national origins bring to the table.”
