Historic Vehicles Saved After BMW Catches Fire At Cecil County Garage

Several classic cars were saved by fast-moving first responders who were called to a garage fire when a BMW engine sparked while it was being worked on in Cecil County.

Shortly before 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning, first responders from the Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Company were called to Kustom Auto Repair on Washington Schoolhouse Road in North East when an engine malfunction led to a two-alarm blaze, officials say.

According to investigators from the Maryland Fire Marshal, the owner of the garage was working on a 2012 BMW X5 when a fire started in the engine compartment.

The mechanic attempted to use multiple fire extinguishers to control the flames, but the fire continued to spread, first to another vehicle and then to adjacent garages.

Firefighters who responded to the scene were able to control the blaze, and the fire marshal made note that they were able to do so before it spread to "historic Corvettes and a Packard."

Investigators say that the cause of the ire was accidental and due to a malfunction in the engine.

No injuries were reported, but the fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the structure and vehicles.
