Sgt. Eric R. Trumbauer of the Anne Arundel Police Department died after suffering a medical emergency while off-duty on Wednesday, Jan. 24, Daily Voice reported. He was 49.

Sgt. Trumbauer’s law enforcement career started in October 2002 as a member of the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s 60th Recruit Class.

He spent 10 years patrolling the Northern and Southern districts, during which he was recognized as Officer of the Year by both the Northern District Community Relations Committee and the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, his obituary says.

The dedicated sergeant then spent five years as a fatal crash investigator with the Special Operation Division Traffic Safety Section and eventually returned to the patrol. He was recognized as one of the top DUI enforcers in Maryland by the state a total of 14 times.

Trumbauer is survived by his loving wife, Kelly; cherished daughter, Brooke; caring father, Robert C. Trumbauer; beloved brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” McClanahan (wife Jody); mother-in-law, Barbara Gibson, nieces, Mara and Cora; as well as several extended family members, colleagues, and close friends.

Meanwhile, nearly $24,000 had been raised on a GoFundMe launched for the devoted Sergeant’s family as they begin to mourn his devastating loss. Proceeds will be used for funeral costs and other ongoing expenses.

Numerous tributes hit social media as well:

Sgt. Trumbauer’s viewing was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Bailey Funeral Home and Cremation Service with a memorial set for Thursday at Heritage Community Church in Severn.

“My heart aches for the family of Sergeant Eric Trumbauer and the men and women of the Anne Arundel County Police Department on the loss of this fine officer,” reads a tribute from District 4 Councilwoman Julie Hummer.

“We are all grateful for your service.”
