Cherished Long Island Soccer Coach, Father Dies Suddenly From Cardiac Arrest
A beloved Long Island father and soccer coach has died suddenly from cardiac arrest, and the community has rallied in a fundraiser for his family.
Carlos Javier Mejia, also known affectionately as “Coach Gato,” spent 21 years as a soccer coach with youth clubs on Long Island, including 15 at Connetquot United Soccer Club, according to the fundraiser. Before he got into youth coaching, he served in the U.S. Army.

An upcoming Netflix movie is filming on Long Island and needs background actors for some scenes.
“Women Like Us,” led by Whoopi Goldberg, will be filming on Shelter Island from Tuesday, Sept. 22 through Tuesday, Sept. 29, according to a social media post from Waldron Casting.
“We are looking for a variety of types to portray Hamptons residents, resort guests & upscale vacationers,” the casting call reads.

Cocaine-Hauling Trio Busted After Saratoga Springs Driving Blunder: Police
A trio of New York men were busted with cocaine after they were pulled over in a traffic stop in the Capital Region, authorities said.
Steven M. Wescott, 40; Jason O. Allen, 47; and Patrick M. Howe, 48, were cuffed Thursday, Sept. 10 in Saratoga Springs, the Saratoga County Sheriff’s office said.
Wescott was behind the wheel of a vehicle that made an illegal signal around 3:15 p.m. Thursday on Hamilton Street, the sheriff’s office said. An investigation at the stop led to Wescott, Allen, and Howe all being charged with two counts of third-degree drug possession, according to authorities.

A sprawling New York car theft and resale scheme that netted $5.5 million and shafted more than 120 car owners has been wrapped up with guilty pleas, authorities said Monday, Sept. 14.
Ringleaders Mark McCall, 34, and Keith Agard, 32, admitted their roles in running the vast operation across Nassau, Suffolk, Kings, Westchester, and Orange counties, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said.
Of the 33 individuals and two corporations named in the initial June 2025 indictment, 34 have pleaded guilty, prosecutors said. Only one case remains pending.
