The fiancé of a Western Massachusetts school teacher was allegedly intoxicated when he cut in front of a police cruiser speeding to a 911 call, killing the educator and injuring their 1-year-old son, authorities said.
Phillip Vargas, age 33, of Vernon in Tolland County, Connecticut, was arrested on Thursday, April 20, and charged in the fatal April 2 crash in Vernon that killed 26-year-old Bianca Colon, a teacher at Springfield Prep Charter School in Springfield, Manchester Police announced.

The owner of a Connecticut construction company and an equipment operator has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a worker who was buried in a collapsed trench.
The incident took place in Tolland County on Friday, July 22, 2022, at a construction site in Vernon that killed Hartford County resident, Dennis Slater, age 56, of East Windsor.

Following additional charges filed against a Connecticut state trooper for alleged domestic violence, state officials released a statement saying the officer remained suspended.
Tolland County resident Trooper Jaime Solis, age 29, of Vernon, who was first arrested on Monday, Aug. 1, for allegedly beating a woman, was arrested again on Wednesday, Aug. 3, for up to 40 additional attacks, according to the Vernon Police.

Sixth Person Arrested For Savage Beating, Shooting Of Rival In Long-Standing Feud
An 18-year-old man is the sixth person to be arrested for an August shooting and beating that police believe arose from a long-standing feud.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Vernon Police arrested Trenton Merrill, 18, 157 Union St., Vernon, on the charges of attempted murder, operating a drug factory, and several other felonies, police said. Merrill is the suspected shooter, police said. He’s being held on a $1.6 million bond.
