Fundraiser For Family Of Central Mass Cop Who Died Off Duty Nears Its Goal
Friends of Worcester police Sgt. Derrick Leto created a fundraiser to help support his wife and two children to help them after his unexpected death last week. The GoFundMe called "Help Support Derrick Leto's Family" has raised nearly $7,000 in less than two days, more than half of its goal of $10,000. There is also a memorial fund for the family of the 18-year veteran and former US Marine at the Worcester Police Department Federal Credit Union. Officer Dies Off-Duty: Central Mass Mourns Loss Of 18-Year Police Veteran
A Worcester police sergeant called a "dedicated servant" by several community groups died last week while off duty, the department announced over the weekend. Official said Monday that his funeral services are set for later this week. Derrick Leto, a husband and father of two, who served as the department's diversity coordinator and recruiter, was an 18-year veteran of the force, Worcester police said. The Department of Justice has opened a civil investigation into the Worcester Police Department to determine if the agency uses excessive force or engages in racial or gender bias. Four Suspects Nabbed After Teenage Lifeguard Stabbed At Massachusetts Pond
Four Massachusetts men were arrested after they allegedly attacked and stabbed a lifeguard on duty at an area pond. The attack took place around 6:30 p.m., Sunday, July 4, when Worcester Police officers were dispatched to the area of Bell Pond for a report of several males attacking the lifeguard on duty. When they arrived on the scene, the officers were brought to the 17-year-old male lifeguard, who had been stabbed. Police Rescue Elderly Woman From 'Fully-Engulfed' Structure Fire
Officers could hear the screaming coming from inside of the burning building. On Saturday, Feb. 27, emergency responders were called to a multi-unit dwelling on Chilmark Street that had become fully engulfed in flames, police said. At around 1:20 a.m., when Worcester Police first got on the scene, they observed people in the rear common hallway screaming for help as smoke filled the corridor.
