Person, Dog Rescued From River In Western Mass A person and their dog were rescued from a river in Western Massachusetts after being swept away in the current. It happened at 9:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 23 in Hampshire County. Firefighters in Northampton were dispatched to the Mill River behind Maines Field for an individual and dog that were swept away in the current.  Once on the scene, firefighters found the individual and dog holding onto a tree that was across the river, unable to fight the current to the shore, said the Northampton Fire Department.  Firefighters donned water rescue suits and entered the water. Bicyclist Hospitalized After Western Mass Crash A 71-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized in Western Massachusetts this week after being struck by a car while crossing the street, police said. First responders from the Northampton Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of 221 Pine St. at 1:40 p.m. on Monday, June 28, where there was a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a car. Police said that the 71-year-old bicyclist was treated at the scene before being transported to Baystate Hospital for further evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police Investigating After Man's Body Found In Connecticut River Police launched an investigation after a man’s body was found by a boater in the Connecticut River in Western Mass. The discovery in Hampshire County happened around 6 p.m., Friday, May 21, in the river in Northampton, said Laurie Loisel, director of Communications for the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. The boater summoned emergency help when he discovered the body and then stayed with the body to help the police find it, Loisel said. Hovercraft Used To Rescue Man Stranded On Ice Island In Hilltowns Firefighters used a hovercraft to rescue an elderly man who had become trapped on an ice island in the middle of a lake Monday, Dec. 28. The man, who was not identified, was out hunting in the Knightville Dam area in Huntington when he became lost and found himself on a patch of ice 300 feet from shore, according to MassLive. Using a cell phone, the man was able to call 911 and dispatchers were able to ping his location in the Knigtville Basin.
