While there has been an overwhelming amount of news these days, the month of January has been relatively uneventful when it comes to the weather. But a storm system that brought mainly rain to most of the region kicked off the weekend with some areas north and inland seeing 1 to 3 inches of snowfall, with a few parts of New England getting between one foot to 18 inches of snow accumulation. Polar Vortex Expected To Bring Major Shift In Weather Pattern, Several Chances For Snowfall
Following a stormy first few days of 2021, a stretch of dry, seasonable days is likely to continue for another week before a big change in the weather pattern with the expected arrival of the polar vortex. Located about 20 miles over the earth's surface, the polar vortex is a low-pressure system that leads to the swirling of Arctic air around the polar regions which unleashes cold air much farther south, including in North America. Snowfall From Merging Storms Now Expected In Wider Part Of Region
A wider part of the region is now expected to see some snowfall from a winterlike storm moving in from the Midwest that will combine forces with the remnants of Hurricane Zeta. The time frame for the merging storms is Thursday afternoon, Oct. 29 into Friday, Oct. 30, with the snowfall expected at times during the day and evening on Friday as the temperature drops. Snow Way! Merging Storms Will Bring Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds To Area, White Stuff In Some Spots
A winterlike storm that is dumping snow and ice in the Rockies and parts of the Midwest will combine forces with the remnants of Tropical Storm Zeta to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the region as well as snowfall in some spots in the Northeast. The time frame for the merging storms is Thursday afternoon, Oct. 29 into Friday, Oct. 30.
