Crews responded to the fire at 68 Federal Street just after 4 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, according to the Springfield Fire Department on Twitter. Investigators determined that the fire started in the living room.
Paramedics rushed a woman in her 60s to the hospital for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries, officials said Friday afternoon. They did not release her name.
The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad said the fire began from an improperly disposed of "smoking material" in an apartment living room.
No other information was released.
