Smoke from Canadian and northern Minnesota wildfires continued lowering air quality and visibility on Thursday, July 16, triggering alerts across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and other parts of the eastern US.
The smoke was visible on satellite imagery from the National Weather Service Eastern Region Headquarters as upper-level winds carried it across the region.

A 2-year-old New Jersey girl, her mother, and her grandfather pilot were killed in a small plane crash just after taking off from the Adirondack Regional Airport in New York this week.
Guiliana Hillgrube, her 33-year-old mother Gabriella, and her 70-year-old grandfather Gabriele Jasper, were identified on Wednesday, July 15 as the victims of the crash two days prior, according to New York State Police.
