Alex Caiza-Apugllon, 28, of Chicopee, was arrested early Saturday morning, March 15, after troopers were alerted to a red Hyundai Elantra traveling east in the westbound lanes of the interstate in Farmington, according to Connecticut State Police.

Police said Caiza-Apugllon initially entered the Fienemann Road off-ramp just before 5 a.m. Moments later, troopers spotted him reversing down the Exit 39A connector to Route 9 southbound.

Caiza-Apugllon said he knew he was driving the wrong way because he was "looking at the map on his phone."

Troopers said Caiza-Apugllon appeared intoxicated, but he said he hadn't had anything to drink before getting behind the wheel. However, he failed a field sobriety test, police said.

He was charged with operating under the influence, driving without a license, reckless driving, driving the wrong way on a limited access highway, illegal entry onto a limited access highway, unsafe backing, and reckless endangerment in the second degree, police said.

Caiza-Apugllon was released on a $10,000 bond, authorities said.
