A new form of DNA evidence can be used in the upcoming trial of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, a Long Island judge ruled. The decision, filed Wednesday, Sept. 3, in Suffolk County Supreme Court, permits prosecutors to introduce nuclear DNA profiles generated from rootless hairs recovered at several crime scenes. Justice Timothy Mazzei found that the method, which relies on whole genome sequencing and specialized computer software to extract nuclear DNA from even degraded or rootless hairs, is generally accepted in the scientific community and therefore admissible in court.…

Man Dies After Jumping From Fire Island Lighthouse
A man died after jumping from the Fire Island Lighthouse, police said. The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Robert Moses Field 5. A 911 caller reported seeing a man jump from the observation deck of the historic lighthouse, Suffolk County Police said. Marine Bureau officers responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released as of press time. A Wyandanch native who drowned at Sailors Haven on Fire Island is being remembered as a decorated combat veteran and kind soul who dedicated his life to service, friends told Daily Voice on Sunday, Aug. 24. Authorities are hoping new details about a male victim in the Gilgo Beach serial murders case – and a cash reward – will lead to his identification.
