Staples HS Grad Killed By Falling Tree In Fairfield Remembered As Talented Sales Exec, Chef The 54-year-old man killed in Fairfield when a tree fell on his car during a storm is being remembered as a talented sales executive and chef. David Laurence Schmerzler, a lifelong resident of both Westport and Fairfield, died Sunday, June 30.  He was vice president of sales at Lindenmeyr Central, a paper company with offices in Southport. ID Released For Man Struck, Killed By Tree Limb In Fairfield A 54-year-old man killed when a tree branch smashed onto his vehicle has been identified by Fairfield Police. David L. Schmerzler was driving in front of 3330 Sturges Highway when his vehicle was hit by a large limb from a Sassafras tree around 2:16 p.m., Sunday, June 30, said Fairfield Police Capt. Robert Kalamaras. When first responders arrived on the scene they found Schmerzler unconscious in the driver's seat, Kalamaras said. Power Outage Update: Latest Numbers From Fairfield County After Sunday's Devastating Storms Hundreds remain without power in Fairfield County after severe storms tore through the region. As for 9 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 1,387 of Eversource’s 1,274,935 customers in Connecticut remained in the dark, while 190 of United Illuminating’s 334,788 customers were still without power, due to 25 reported outages. Norwalk was hit the hardest, with 514 customers still reporting outages on Monday morning.
