The Wilton Warriors relied on 13 second-half points from sophomore Erica Meyer as it turned around a halftime deficit and won a tight game, 37-31, versus Staples High School Tuesday, extending the Warriors' win streak to 13 games.
Wilton’s attack was paced by Meyer and senior point guard Casey Pearsall, who scored 14 in the winning effort. Porco says the game was good for her team -- a squad that loves to run -- to get into a slow-down, defensive game. “This game just made us better,” she said.
Porco said the team was better in the second half mainly because the players all were on the same page. “The tempo of the game was different than we were used to,” she said.
Being forced to change from a “go, go, go” game to a more patient type of game will be a great benefit to the Warriors down the road, she said.
“No one’s done that yet and now we’re prepared for it," Porco said. "The girls now have confidence. They get nervous when they play defense for three minutes."
Meyer said the team was playing well, but she had to pick it up to get things moving. “Those 13 points came off of some good assists,” she said.
Staples was led by senior guard Nicole Bukovsky, who had 10 points,even though she missed a portion of the game with an ankle injury.
Staples Head Coach Ed Huydic said the Wreckers had a game plan and did a great job of slowing down the Warriors. However, Huydic said his team didn't execute enough and could not get any low-post scoring.
“The difference in this game was we didn't finish. We didn't finish free throws and we missed too many layups,” he said. “Otherwise, this story line is quite a different story line.”
Wilton is now 15-2 and next plays Friday at Bassick. Staples falls to 6-11 and will travel Friday to Stamford to play Westhill.
