The student-run effort — which is affiliated with the Wilton Education Foundation, or WEF — raises money for Wilton’s schools. Since it was founded four years ago by a group of then-second graders who wanted to give back to the schools, Bottled Up! has to date raised and donated $2,300, said Heather Borden Herve, a WEF member who helps advise Bottled Up!.
“We’re making it easy for anyone who has recyclables to donate,” said Borden Herve. “You can just drive into the Cider Mill bus loop, pop open your trunk, and the kids will unload your bottles and cans for you. You don’t even have to get out of your car.”
Bottled Up! students will be at Cider Mill School from 9 a.m. to noon. After the drive, items collected are sorted, counted, bagged and then redeemed for the $.5 bottle deposit. The money will then be deposited into a special account at Wilton Bank.
Stop & Shop, Westy Self Storage and Wilton Hardware have agreed to sponsor the event with in-kind and material donations.
The Wilton Education Foundation is a group that works to support teachers and enrich the learning experience for Wilton students. Recently, WEF gave more than $100,000 to the schools to fund technology and arts programs, teacher development and continuing education, iPad Institute, SMARTBoards, music and arts enrichment, I-STEM programs and more, Borden Herve said.
“The money that the [Bottled Up!] kids raise goes into the collective funds that WEF raises and gives to the schools,” she said.
