Man Burned In Wilton Crash Remains In Critical Condition

WILTON, Conn. – The Norwalk man pulled from his burning car after an accident in Wilton on Tuesday remained in critical condition Thursday at Bridgeport Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Willie Singleton, 52, was still in the hospital’s burn unit Thursday, the spokesman said. Wilton police and firefighters removed Singleton from a 1996 Oldsmobile early Tuesday evening after it crashed off Hurlbutt Street near Maplewood Lane.

Officers were on the scene Thursday to continue the investigation. Pieces of the vehicle were still in the area, and smoke damage was visible on trees.

The 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass that Singleton was driving was engulfed in flames when officers reached the scene, police said. Officers initially could not get Singleton out because of the intense heat, police said. The flames continued to intensify even as officers used fire extinguishers to try to reach Singleton. Wilton firefighters arrived and used fire extinguishers and fire hoses to beat back the blaze and free Singleton, police said.

Singleton was transferred from Norwalk Hospital to Bridgeport Hospital.

The investigation into the wreck was continuing, police said.
