WILTON, Conn. – A former Wilton Stop & Shop employee accused of attempting to steal cigarettes is facing several charges from Wilton Police.

Reginald R. Joseph, 42, of Tremont Ave., Bridgeport, is charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, assault on a public safety officer, all felonies, and interfering with a police officer, a misdemeanor, according to the Norwalk Superior Court clerk’s office.

Police said they were called to Stop & Shop on River Road in Wilton Center at 9:14 p.m. Sunday after receiving word that a former employee was believed to be hiding in the store after hours to steal cigarettes. Wilton officers and officers from the Westport Police K-9 unit were preparing to enter the store when Joseph came out the front door with a box in his hands, police said.

Police said they ordered Joseph to stop, but he ran at one of the officers, pushing him and kicking the police dog. Joseph continued to run, and the K-9 was released, police said. The dog subsequently took Joseph to the ground, police said.

Joseph was arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday. He was ordered held on $60,000 bond and is scheduled to appear next Jan. 28.
