Longtime Volunteer Dies at 91

Former Wilton and New Canaan resident Lee P. Hindenach spent his life volunteering to help others. On Friday, Aug. 27, he died at the age of 91.

According to his family, he had a long history of community service, which included co-founding the Wilton Rotary Club in 1982. He also served as the director of the United Way in New Canaan and in Wilton.

His most recent work came with Family ReEntry in Norwalk, where he served on the board of directors for two years before being elected president for the next eight. After his time in that position, he was named honorary director.

Music and church were also important components in Hindenach's life, and he combined the two by singing in the choir his entire life. He also helped found the Gentlemen Songsters, a singing group of retired men, more than 25 years ago. On the church side, he filled many leadership roles and worked with the Stephen Ministries.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 48 years, Cicely, and his second wife of 15 years, Dorothy. He is survived by his four children: son and daughter-in-law, John and Lori Hindenach of San Carlos, Calif.; daughter and son in-law, Marty and John Kozlowski of Wilton; son Phil Hindenach and partner, Dennis Lynch of Reseda, Calif.; and daughter and son-in-law Peggy and John Alton of Columbus, Ohio. He also will be missed by 16 grandchildren and four stepchildren.

He lived in Wilton and New Canaan over the past 41 years before living at Meadow Ridge in Redding.

The First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan will hold a celebration of Hindenach's life 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Memorial donations may be sent to Family ReEntry at 9 Mott Ave., Suite 104, Norwalk, CT 06850.
