Flour Delivery Goes Awry on Merritt

Commuters heading north on the Merritt Parkway on Tuesday afternoon were slowed – or stopped – by a tractor-trailer that mistakenly entered the parkway and hit a low overpass along the roadway.

The tractor-trailer, carrying 30,000 pounds of flour, struck an overpass near Exit 42 on Tuesday, shutting down the northbound lanes entirely for five hours. Commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers are not allowed on the Merritt Parkway. According to published reports, the driver of the truck didn't see the sign prohibiting commercial vehicles when he got on the roadway.

The accident held up traffic for about five hours, with northbound traffic on the Merritt backed up as far as Exit 37, reports said. Neither the driver nor the overpass was harmed. No flour was spilled in the incident.
