As they have done for nearly two decades, Democrats from the 125th Assembly District will most likely not run a candidate to challenge Republican incumbent John Hetherington in November. The party held its nominating convention Tuesday night for the district, which covers parts of New Canaan and Wilton. But they did not have a willing volunteer to challenge Hetherington, who has run unopposed since first winning the seat in 2002. New Canaan Democrats did, however, name one candidate Tuesday, choosing Democratic Registrar of Voters George Cody to run for re-election.
Coincidentally, Cody was the last Democrat to run for the state assembly out of the 125th district, challenging then-incumbent Les Young in 1986. I ran under the ingenious slogan Dont settle for Les, Cody said. He explained that in a town like New Canaan it can be hard to find a candidate willing to run from the minority party. Its very hard, in a real one-party town, to put your name out there and get shot down on election day, he said.
Still, Cody said he will support Hetherington in the upcoming election, because both Democrats and Republicans mostly want the same things at the state level for the town. The issue for New Canaan are pretty limited up [in Hartford,] he said. Its just to get them to stop treating us like an ATM.
As the partys registrar of voters for the past 18 years, however, Cody has done his share to help the town at the state level. He had been heavily involved with the Registrars of Voters Association of Connecticut, serving as its president from 2006 to 2008 and now a member of its legislative board. He was also a part of the blue-ribbon committee that decided upon electronic voting machines for state elections.
