Couple Helps Put Together Car Show

When the Georgetown Community Association sponsored a car show Saturday afternoon, Bob and Gloria Bass decided to help. Besides being active volunteers for the association, Bob and Gloria also own several classic cars.

"People who have old cars know people with old cars," Gloria said. She got six other cars besides their 1940 Chevrolet Coupe to be on display in the first annual Georgetown Car Show. Though the turnout was small, Gloria did not seem to mind.

"We put it out there and whoever showed up, showed up," she said, explaining that it takes time to build interest and hoping it will grow in the future.

Gloria's husband, Bob, graduated from Gilbert & Bennett School, now the community center, in 1951. As a former carpenter, he routinely does restoration work at the school.

Bob said he has always loved cars and learned how to fix them while working at a Texaco station in high school. However, when he graduated from Henry Abbott Technical High School in Danbury, Bob said he chose carpentry, a decision he looks on fondly now.

"I am glad I (chose carpentry) now, I couldn't work on these new cars," Bass said, Older cars "I could put together blindfolded."

The association holds events at the school to help bind the Georgetown community together and to support Gilbert & Bennett, which is now a protected historical site. The next event will be a pumpkin festival in October.
