Harvard Grad Student Becomes First Active Military Member Crowned Miss America A graduate student at Harvard has made history as the first active duty member of the military to be crowned Miss America. Madison Marsh, who is working on her master's degree in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and currently a graduate intern with Harvard Medical School, was crowned on Sunday, Jan. 14. Miss Connecticut Falls Short As First Runner Up In Miss America Competition Miss Connecticut Bridget Oei fell short by to Miss New York in Sunday night's Miss America competition The 22-year-old Irish step dancer from Hebron -- named among the eight contestants to watch by Cosmopolitan -- was first runner up in the 2019 contest. Miss New York Nia Franklin was crowned Miss America. Oei is ranked the fifth best Irish dancer in the world and graduated from UConn with a degree in environmental chemistry. This was the first year that the contest at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall that took place without a swimsuit competition.
