WESTON, Conn. Westons girls track and field team won its seventh straight South-West Conference championship Monday at Bethel High School. It may have been the Trojans most unlikely. It certainly was their most dramatic.
With all but a few people long gone after a long wet meet, Weston scored 22.5 points in the pole vault the final event to be tabulated to nip New Milford. Weston finished with 102.5 points, while New Milford finished with 102. The Green Wave had finished the league season undefeated.
We scored a bunch of points in the last hour of the meet, coach Matt Medve said. Almost every girl on our team picked up a point for us today. It was a total team effort.
With just four events left, New Milford led Weston 84-56.5. In the final event on the track, New Milford won the 4 x 400 relay and Weston finished second. With just the pole vault to be scored, New Milford led 102-80.5.
Emily Savage and Jane Wall tied for second, while Andrea Janis took fifth and Tess Fagan took sixth. Emily Castro, a sophomore, finished eighth. That was just enough to propel Weston to the title.
Emily and Tess got points for us in the pole vault, triple jump and high jump, Medve said. That was huge. We needed every one of them.
Weston won the 4 x 100 relay with Amanda Matluck, Ellie Martin, Sydney Allon and Whitney Farber. Nina Low joined Martin, Allon and Farber on the second place 4 x 400 relay. Martin (javelin) and Liza Rosenbloom (discus) picked up points in throwing events. Farber took second in the 200 and fifth in the 100. Sarah Dietzman picked up a second in the triple jump and a third in the long jump, and Martin added points in the 400.
We werent expected to win, we didnt have a great dual meet team, Medve said. But championship meets are a little bit different. I couldnt be more proud of the kids.
Westons boys finished fifth with 60.5 points. David Stankiewicz had a terrific meet, winning the 800 and anchoring the second place 4 x 800 team and first place 4 x 400 relay. Jon Savicky, Simeon Okoro and Zachary Cannon joined Stankiewicz on the 4 x 400.
Savicky was fourth in the 400, while Harry Manning and Will Crum picked up points in the pole vault. Larry Cass added points in the shot put and discus.
