Richards, a longtime Weston resident, is being recognized not only for his decades-long music career but his deep commitment to the local community. His support for organizations like SPHERE, which empowers adults with disabilities, and The Prospector Theater, which creates meaningful jobs through film, has made a lasting impact across the state, Lamont said.
“This award was created to honor those whose creativity, resourcefulness, and passion have made a lasting impact on our state and beyond,” Lamont added. “Keith Richards is the epitome of these values.”
Richards, who has long championed arts and education initiatives in Connecticut, emphasized the importance of public spaces like libraries.
“When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully: the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you,” Richards said. “The public library is the great equalizer.”
The newly established award includes a custom-designed medallion crafted by Connecticut State Trooper Danny Carvalho and produced by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT). It also features a ribbon designed and sewn by Enfield-based fashion designer Justin Haynes. Richards will also receive a proclamation granting him the “Key to the State.”
Lamont will present Richards with the award at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at an invitation-only ceremony at the Westport Library. The library will close from 3 until 6 p.m.
